Geopathologies: The Birth of the Hydroclinic
Xynogala’s text traces the emergence of Greek hydroclinics—bathhouses built around natural thermal springs—as a unique medical infrastructure where geology, landscape, and care were inseparable. Focusing on sites like Loutra Ypatis, she shows how bathing, steam, and mineral immersion formed a therapeutic system beyond pharmaceutical medicine. The essay also reflects on their later decline, while proposing the hydroclinic as a model for rethinking health through water and environment.
